Switzerland

We stayed in Grindelwald, a four-season mountain resort set in a high alpine valley surrounded by some very imposing scenery. The plan was to park up for a few days and hit the mountains using the famous Swiss cogwheel railways, to fully appreciate the Alps before heading North and ultimately homewards.

The transport system is excellent and there are numerous cable car systems which although expensive will offer you some impressive height gain. The main places we visited during our stay were Jungfraujoch, the high altitude station nestled between the summits of the Jungfrau and Eiger mountains, and Lauterbrunnen with it's stunning valley. Within driving distance of Grindelwald (easily visited as you pass) are the Aare Gorge and Reichenbach Falls. The former being a long, narrow and deep gorge, accessible by a system of tunnels and walkways. The latter is a series of waterfalls featuring in the Sherlock Holmes story, reached by a steep funicular railway.
