Ferrari 360 Modena on the Fluela Pass in Switzerland

The Flüela Pass

The Flüela connects Davos (or more precisely Davos Dorf) to the West and the small town of Susch to the East and at 2383m, is one of the highest Alpine passes.

The road is reasonably wide, well surfaced and when travelled in either direction it ascends initially through pleasant green valleys before breaking clear of the tree line, climbing the narrower hairpin corners as you head towards the barren plateau of the summit.

The Western approach, from Davos

After a 13km ascent climbing between 800-950m depending upon your starting point, this is where you'll find the charming historical hospice, lake, plenty of parking and in all likelihood a fair few other travellers. It's a biker and cyclist favourite so expect plenty of people enjoying the sunshine on a nice summer day. Overall, the pass offers good visibility of the road ahead and the steeper sections towards the top (especially when starting from Davos) will give you the chance to make a bit of noise without having to reach silly speeds.

The Hotel Flüela Hospiz, 2383m

As with many high alpine passes, conditions can change quickly so it may be worth confirming the pass conditions before travelling. In cooler weather and at this altitude, precipitation may often fall as snow, even in the summer. However, if like us you find yourself in the area on a warm sunny day outside of holiday season you'll have a blast.

The area could easily form part of a great route into northern Italy and the lakes region as there are many great roads around and pretty much every view is worthy of a photograph.

With St Moritz 40km to the South and the infamous Stelvio Pass around an hour away to the East, it's possible to find an overnight stop in the area to form a great couple of days driving.
